Here is a pastel from two years ago and an oil on canvas from earlier this week. Translating the light and color of pastel into oil is challenging but the oils also provide many opportunities to reinterpret the color and light through layers and a broader palette possibilities.
The base photos for this work and the previous two posts were actually taken with my cell phone on the Acela train between Boston and NYC. I was going down to NYC on business pretty regularly and found cell phone prep for art-to-be-made-later was a great way to kill time. The Rhode Island and Connecticut coasts are rich with subject. The cell phone image itself is a great starting point because at that time my low-tech phone took low-tech images that made perfect composition starters.
