This is an experiment in breaking up the picture plane. The bottom third is something like a reflection, but not quite. I’m also playing around with a softer palette than I sometimes use.

"Dappled Things"

I had some wonderful success one day this spring making patterned papers while mono-printing. I’m using them in these paintings. Sometimes I go further than I had expected and there isn’t much of the original papers left showing. This one is a good middle ground. You can see some of the patterns in the middle-lower half of the image.
Last Day of School - 18” x 18” mixed media on canvas - This one feels to me like a path toward a bright but unknown place. With school ending and summer somewhere on the horizon, this one is an ode to the anticipation and nostalgia I always feel this time of year.
Midnight in Maurilia

Italo Calvino’s “Invisible Cities” is an old favorite of mine. Mauriia is a city built on the memory of another city of the same name. John and I just saw Woody Allen’s new movie “Midnight in Paris” which is essentially the same idea. This painting is a postcard of one of those imagined cities.
Teen Drawing Class at the Dover Town Library

I’m teaching a 3 day drawing workshop for teens at the Dover Public Library. It begins Wednesday June 8, and runs for three consecutive Wednesday evenings. We’re interpreting “teen” loosely, so kids in double digits are welcome, as are folks who are back from college and what have you.

In my classes, we’ve been working on differentiating colors within a hue. To do this, I set up a primarily blue still-life, and added some pears. This is my “sample”. To see the student work, check out my website and look under “classwork”.

This is a sketch for a series of three images of Needham. The sketch is on 16” x 20” paper and done in oil paint. The final prints will not have the ragged top of the paper.
"Light Nestles in These Walls",

The stained glass in Gothic cathedrals make walls of light. Cathedrals of course can represent certain kind of path. This painting is just a path to the beach.
This is a Valentine to my hometown, Needham, Mass. It turns 300 this year and I’ve been trying to figure out how to paint some of the places that represent the town. The blue tree is a nostalgic favorite, but at the same time it blocks the view of our historic Town Hall. Here’s my solution.
