Here I think there is more spacial depth. The tree shapes in the foreground relate in a spacial way to the “trees” in the distance. Those distant shapes also could describe buildings. I am excited by this new direction in my palette.

This is it for 10” x 10” panels, but I’m working on more paintings using this new (to me) approach. Stay tuned.

In this composition, I can’t decide which way is up. The “branches” are breaking down further so that sometimes they describe stick-like objects, in other places they outline more mass-like shapes. House shapes return but there might be sky or a horizon depending on how you look at it.

I’m balancing on a point. On one side is the landscape approach, what Elizabeth called “window on the world”, which I’m doing in this painting. On the other side is the more abstract, broken space, flattened pattern approach to composition. I can’t seem to reconcile the two approaches and I’m not sure I need to. The next several paintings I’ll post will show where this is leading me.

What is it about the webs and tendrils that I find so compelling? Ladders, capillaries, power lines, roots and shadows all reach out to connect things. Nestled in that complex environment ideas get snagged. Houses are tucked. Positive and negative spaces reverse.

I’ve always been a fan of Milton Avery… — Inspired by those mid-century Modernist landscape painters. I came home and painted this picture over the weekend. It is 18” x 18” oil on canvas. How did I come by this inspiration you ask?

I’ve always been a fan of Milton Avery, John Marin and Marsden Hartley. But this week in Portland Maine I had the pleasure of seeing 14 Maine Modernists at the Gleason Fine Art Gallery. If I lived closer, this is the type of show that would have me coming back every few days to take in the work. The person running the gallery kindly found a brochure of Emil Holzhauer’s work for me to take, which I’m loving.

In addition to the delicious modernists, the front of the gallery was exhibiting invited artists, this group is also well worth a visit. Karen Tusinski had several large pieces showing.

Coming back to the Monoprint group has begun that popping and snapping feeling in my head. Ideas are coming quickly and they need sorting and sketching to see if they’re worth working into larger pieces. Last time I did Monoprinting, it set me off on a whole new body of work. Can’t wait to see what comes of it this time.

New Paintings by Karen Cass are now on view at Harvard University’s The Three Columns Gallery; Mather House, 10 Cowperthwait Street in Cambridge.

I met Karen at the gallery on Wednesday and was so pleased and impressed by the work. The show is called Enchanted Gardens. Much of the work is inspired by tropical rainforests Karen saw while on vacation a couple of years ago. The paintings are layered both physically in paint, as well as in imagery. I felt as if I was in a thicket looking both through the natural world as well as through the layers of associations that windows, birds and vegetation bring to mind.

If you can get there, the show is only up till April 25th, I strongly recommend it.

Caroline and John are both showing work at MPG Home Designs in Newburyport Mass. Newburyport does a terrific “Art Walk”, and Saturday April 16th there will be special events at several of the galleries. I often get my titles from poetry. Mary Oliver is one of my favorite poets. I struggled to find a title for this piece and this morning while thinking about it I picked up one of her books and opened it at random. Here is the poem I found:

**The Other Kingdoms**

Consider the other kingdoms. The

trees for example, with their mellow-sounding

titles: oak, aspen, willow.

Or the snow, for which the peoples of the north

have dozens of words to describe its

different arrivals. Or the creatures, with their

thick fur, their shy and wordless gaze. Their

infallible sense of what their lives

are meant to be. Thus the world

grows rich, grows wild, and you too,

grow rich, grow sweetly wild, as you too

This session is Painting! Appropriate for new as well as repeat students. While we focus on acrylic painting on canvas, there will be some other media thrown in as well. Always a relaxed and encouraging environment. Class size is limited so register early.
