Cape Cod Landscapes

We’ll be off to the Cape again in August and I was thinking about the work I usually do down there. I have this whole other body of landscape work. Typically I paint in the mornings and John paints in the afternoons. Those two times of day have the best light (though it changes fast). I like to do paintings from observation whether they’re trees, houses or fruits and veggies. And then over time I let my imagination abstract and mix them up.

But it always starts from observation.

I have a whole lot of work like this. Three of these are 12” x 24” and three are 18” x 36”. All were done in Brewster, MA. Check out some of John’s landscapes too: http://jrufoart.tumblr.com/

I can’t say enough about Suzanne Bouffard’s incredible evening of improvisational tap and jazz. We brought the kids and their eyes were opened to a whole new approach to dance - casual and cool, and done for the love of it.

Spooky

One fellow printmaker mentioned to me that these prints feel more narrative than many of the other prints I’ve produced this spring. They remind me of the really grim Grimm’s Tales. Anybody ever read “The Juniper Tree”?

More Sketchbooks

A few still life sketches from a while back. I haven’t been doing these as much lately but I’m reminded here of how quick they are, and how good for the skills.

I’m finding now that the kids are home for summer vacation - quick studies fit my schedule better than big paintings. (Or so I keep telling those big white canvases in the hall.)

Which Way’s Up?

Three monoprints I made this spring. Is it sky? Is it water? I’m not sure either. I can’t seem to decide which way I want to hang them. Monoprinting is where the whole tree series of paintings began. Croatia Sketches

A couple of years ago we took a trip to visit my sister and her family in Zagreb. These are some of the little watercolors I did in my sketchbook while we were there. If the image looks at all like an Austrian city, then the image is from Zagreb. The beachy more Adriatic Sea looking ones are from Biograd or Split where we went for several days. Ahhh, vacation…

Galleries, Shows, and other Announcements…

In other news, two of my smaller landscape paintings are currently in the window at the Page Waterman Gallery in Wellesley. Once the Daniels Gallery show comes down, Page Waterman is planning a window display of some of my new paintings.

Just announcing the launch of a website I designed. My coding counterpart Gary Pihl and I have completed the new Corderman & Company website. I also designed their logo, and marketing materials, and if you look closely in the “About Us” area of the site, you’ll see a couple of paintings they commissioned from me hanging in their new fabulous office space. Terrific folks to work with and for.

This is the last piece I finished before the show. I call it “Reflection Land”.

When the girls were smaller, we used to make up stories for them before they went to sleep. One favorite motif was “Reflection Land”, which they could reach by holding hands and jumping into a puddle. This painting has several reflections, above and below, left and right, which I think you can only really see in person. It is 48” square, mixed media with oil paint on canvas.

It was a tricky class for me because i… — I took a monoprint class about a year ago with a lovely and talented friend (you know who you are). It was a small class, seven of us including the instructor, Joni Levy Lieberman (http://jonilevyliberman.com)

It was a tricky class for me because it pushed me out of my usual way of working, which is, as we all know, great… Except that I didn’t make much that I really liked. Fortunately, at the end of the semester, Joni had us all cut up some prints and exchange one inch squares. With the squares, we all made art to mail to each other over the summer. That is how I got started with the first three “Night Climbing” paintings. And, clearly I’m not done with them yet.

The painting I’ve posted here is 36” x 36”, mixed media with oil paint on canvas. I’m calling it Dream Tree #1. Yeah, there’s another in the works.

Treat yourself and have a look at Joni’s website (above) and at Elizabeth Carter’s site (below). I hesitate to call Elizabeth a fellow student because it implies she’s just getting started as an artist. A quick look at the work will dispel that misconception. Wish the others had sites I could send you to. Suffice to say, the work is tremendous.

I’m playing around with what I see and what I remember. Sometimes I like to stick to what my eye is trying to tell me (if my brain would just stop interrupting.) But sometimes I like to remind my eye that my mind can feel a place and when it does, it imposes a different kind of structure.

The Night Climbing series (posted in October 2009) is all about the mind. The fruits and veggies are much more about the experience of vision. Everything else is my attempt to make both experiences work in the same painting. Once in a while it works.
