"What the Living Do" 18"x18", mixed media and oil on canvas. Marie Howe is a poet I heard on Fresh Air. Often my painting titles come from poets I admire and enjoy. I’m afraid this one is lifted directly from the title of one of her poems. It is more optimistic than the title might suggest. Just what was needed this spring.
"What the Distracted One is Thinking", 18"x18", mixed media and oil on canvas. The last day of school always makes me a little nostalgic. The early summer light, the passage of time. I’m working from a series of small paintings from a year or so ago. Layers of paint beginning with acrylic and ending with oils. Some of the projects I did with students (especially concerning pattern) have clearly influenced what I’m up to here.

And so we said goodbye…
Last night I held the final class for my adult art students. I have LOVED doing this and will miss everyone! The work last night (and over the last couple of years) was truly outstanding. I hope to be able to resume once I’ve settled into my new teaching position. Thanks so much everyone, I will miss you all!

March feels like August this year, reminding me of the heat that comes up off the road even as the sun goes down and the shade gets a bit cooler.

Getting ready for our show at the Needham Public Library in February. I’ll post when it goes up.
I’ve accepted a job as art teacher at Ursuline Academy in Dedham Massachusetts.
I wasn’t looking for a change, but when the opportunity came my way, it was such a perfect fit I couldn’t pass it up. Unfortunately, this means that I’ve suspended my offerings of morning and after school art classes. I have kept one adult evening class going, but by consolidating my morning group into the evening group, I have no openings for new students at this time.
I will miss the students I’ve been teaching, wonderful artists each and every one. But I am also very excited about the new students I am about to meet; and the opportunity to craft the art program for the school. 2012 appears to be full of new beginnings for the Rufos!
